Summer 2022 Reading Challenges for All Ages

Local and National Challenges with fun prizes!

Avoid the summer slide by keeping kids reading this summer. Do your kiddos need some outside motivation to crack open that book? Check out these summer reading programs with incentives to read -- enter one, or all!  

Casey Memorial Library Read Beyond the Beaten Path Program

How it works:

Register here.

Between June 7th and July 19th, track your reading and complete online activities to earn prizes and drawing entries. And don't forget to visit the library for weekly take home crafts and programs for preschoolers, kids, and teens!

In person programming will be available on Saturdays from 10-11 am for preschoolers, kids, and teens.

Copperas Cove Public Library Oceans of Possibilities Summer Reading

How it works:

Register here.

This year’s Summer Reading Program will engage kids ages 1-15 in activities based on oceans, marine life, and various Earth systems that will be told through stories, crafts, programs, and songs! 

Registration began June 1st while in-person programs will occur June 14th - July 21st.

Temple Public Library Oceans of Possibilities Summer Reading

How it works:

Sign up for the program and participate in reading challenges to win surprise incentives!

Belton Public Library Oceans of Possibilities Summer Reading

How it works:

Registration begins on May 23rd and ends on June 4th. You must be IN-PERSON to register.

The Summer Reading Program has a range of events geared towards both toddler and elementary school ages.

Harker Heights Public Library Family Camp Read Program

How it works:

Sign up for the club and get access to:

  • reading missions
  • Facebook LIVEs
  • Youtube videos
  • In-person clubs
  • Story times
  • Workshops
  • Performances

Challenges for kids (ages 0-11), teens (ages 12-17), and adults. Once you've earned enough points, you'll receive a completion certificate you can print and share! You can start on or after June 1, 2022.

Salado Public Library Summer Reading Program

How it works:

Registration begins on May 23rd and ends on June 4th. You must be IN-PERSON to register, registrants receive a bag of summer reading goodies while supplies last.

The Summer Reading Program is for all ages, grown-ups included.

Complete reading logs and turn them in to be entered into a raffle for HUGE prize baskets.

H-E-Buddy Reading Club

How it works:

All you have to do is read ten books, record them on your reading log, and mail it to the address listed! They'll send you your prize.

For ages 3-12, must be postmarked by October 1, 2022.

Pizza Hut Camp BOOK IT!

The reward: Kids grades Pre-K to 6 can earn a free one-topping Personal Pan Pizza® from Pizza Hut for meeting their monthly reading goals in June, July, and August.

How it works:

  • Parents track and reward reading in the Pizza Hut digital dashboard and when your child reaches their goal, slide the tracker all the way to receive a free pizza coupon!
  • Pizza Hut will also be emailing fun activities and book recommendations weekly!

Barnes and Noble Summer Reading Journal

The reward: Kids going into grades 1 to 6 can earn a free book from Barnes & Noble (limit one per child).

How it works:

  • Read any eight books this summer and record them in Barnes & Noble's Summer Reading Journal. Kids have to write a sentence or so to explain which part of the book is their favorite, and why.
  • Bring your completed journal to a Barnes & Noble store anytime from July 1-August 31 to receive a free book.

Chuck E. Cheese Reading Rewards

The reward: Kids can receive 10 free play points.

How it works:

  • Kids need to record that they read every day for two weeks to receive 10 free play points. A food purchase is required.
  • Offer expires December 31, 2022.

Scholastic Summer Reading Program

The reward: Kids of all ages can get access to exclusive digital content (games, author events, character interactions, dance parties, and more!) AND unlock a donation of 100,000 books to Save the Children by keeping their reading streak going all summer!

How it works:

  • Sign up for an account on Home Base and track your summer reading! 
  • The longer a child extends their reading streak™, the more digital experiences they earn!
  • From May 9-August 19

New York Times Summer Reading Contest

The reward: Your child's writing could appear in the New York Times.

How it works:

  • Every Friday from June 10 through August 19, the New York Times will publish a post asking the same two questions: What interested you most in the New York Times this week? Why? 
  • Anyone 11 to 19 years old can post an answer until Thursday, Aug. 19. Contestants can choose from any Times article, essay, video, interactive, podcast, or photograph published in 2022, on any topic they like.
  • The New York Times will announce winners every Tuesday and publish their writing.

Sometimes an incentive -- even a small one! -- is all a kid needs in order to find the motivation to read. We hope these summer reading programs give your child an extra push toward reading this summer!
